Brethren shines in $125K Evangeline Mile

WinStar Farm’s homebred Brethren stepped out to a 3 1/4-length victory Saturday night in the $125,000 Evangeline Mile H. (VIDEO). Co-owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds, 5-year-old Brethren in by Distorted Humor, sire of some 10 stakes winners this year, including top turf horse Boisterous  (G1 Man o’ War S.) and sprinter Jimmy Creed (G2 Potrero Grande S.).

Brethren, a half-brother to WinStar stallion and 2010 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Super Saver, made short order of the Evangeline Mile field with an authoritative move to the fore after sitting just off the flank of pacesetter Unitas for five furlongs. The winner cruised comfortably through the stretch to get the distance in 1:36.01 on a sloppy racetrack.

Brethren has been well-managed by trainer Steve Asmussen throughout his 17-race career, with a record of 5-2-1. His victories include the 2011 Grade 3 Sam F. Davis S. at Tampa Bay Downs.
