Drosselmeyer tops $1M in earnings

WinStar Farm’s Drosselmeyer, winner of the 2010 Belmont Stakes, finished a fast-closing second in the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) Oct 1. at Belmont Park, behind only Flat Out, the likely favorite for next month’s $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).

Drosselmeyer has kept top class company throughout his career and the Gold Cup was no exception. On a track muddied by steady rains, Drosselmeyer was some seven lengths off the lead after a half-mile. He was still fifth with a furlong to run, but really turned it on late to gain the place spot.

Drosselmeyer is a son of WinStar stallion Distorted Humor. He picked up $150,000 on Saturday, raising his lifetime bankroll to $1,028,170 from a record of 4-5-2 in 15 starts. He was a $600,000 Keeneland September yearling sale purchase in 2008. He is a half-brother to Affectionately H. winner Stage Luck and is out of the multiple Grade 1 winning mare Golden Ballet.
