Alexis Tangier battles to take Unzip Me S.

With a furious rally up the rail, Alexis Tangier prevailed by a neck in the $75,000 Unzip Me S. on the downhill turf course at Santa Anita. The 3-year-old daughter of Tiznow is out of Cambiocorsa, the dam of Grade 2 winners Moulin de Mougin and Schiaparelli.

Tiznow’s tally of stakes horses in 2014 now stands at 20, with nine stakes winners, four of them graded, and $6.1 million in progeny earnings.

The 6 ½ furlong Unzip Me was the first stakes start for the Ran Jan Racing Inc. homebred. In between horses early, the bay filly circled around a rival near the head of the stretch, then taken to the rail by Victor Espinoza.

Alexis Tangier made up three lengths in the final furlong, reeling in pacesetter Stars Above Me, then holding off the late charge of Gender Agenda to stop the timer in 1:12.50.

“I hope I can stay in the family,” trainer Richard Mandella quipped with regard to runners produced by Cambiocorsa. “She showed a lot of talent right from the start–so much so that I thought she’d like the dirt. I can’t say enough about the owners. They’re great people and they’re very patient with their horses. They do right by the horse, and you can’t ask for any more than that.”

A maiden special weight winner over the same course on June 21, Alexis Tangier now has three wins and a second from six starts and has earnings of $140,280.
