Distorted Humor's Painting gets first stakes win in dramatic style

Painting came from last in the final three furlongs to win Saturday's $125,000 Ontario Fashion S. (G3) at Woodbine by a neck over Victory Kingdom (AUS).

The 4-year-old filly, who had finished second in a trio of graded stakes this summer at the Canadian track, is now 3-5-1 in 10 starts and has earned $214,445 for owner/breeder Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings Inc.

Painting was in no hurry early in the six-furlong contest, trailing the field for the first half of the race. She began to wind up midway on the turn and went four-wide into the stretch. Victory Kingdom was up two lengths with a furlong to run, but Painting was cutting into the margin with every stride and went by in deep stretch to win by a neck in 1:09.46 on the synthetic surface.

“We were cross-entered, but winning this race was much more important because it’s graded against more significant company,” winning trainer Josie Carroll said. “I had her siblings and her mother. I go a long way back with this family. That always makes it special.”

Painting is the 158th black-type winner and 67th graded winner for her longtime leading sire Distorted Humor. The winner is out of MSW & GISP Handpainted, who is also the dam of SW & GSP Patena and MSP Oil Painting, also by Distorted Humor. Handpainted is a half-sister to Canadian champion Serenading. This is also the family of Canadian Horse of the Year With Approval, MGISW Touch Gold  and GISW Brilliant Speed.
