First foal arrives for Sidney’s Candy

Sidney’s Candy, the Grade 1-winning and two-time track record-setting son of Candy Ride (Arg), sired his first foal Friday, Jan. 11 when a dark bay or brown colt was born at Brandywine Farm in Paris, KY.

Bred by WinQuest Thoroughbreds LLC, the colt is out of the young mare Miss Euphoria, by Aragorn (Ire). The second colt believed to be born came Thursday morning at Sidney’s Candy’s home of WinStar Farm. Bred by a partnership of WinStar and Winchell Thoroughbreds, the chestnut colt hails from the regally-bred mare Ominous Cat, a daughter of Storm Cat out of Kentucky Oaks winner Fleet Renee, by Seattle Slew. Ominous Cat’s first foal is the promising 3-year-old colt Nevada, a $375,000 yearling purchase by Coolmore.

“He’s a leggy, athletic foal; has all of Sidney’s Candy’s positive attributes,” said Chris Baker, farm manager at WinStar. “My expectations for ‘Sidney’s’ offspring are high, and this colt has exceeded them.”

On the track, Sidney’s Candy set a Del Mar track record in his 5 1/2-furlong, maiden-breaking performance as a 2-year-old, and nabbed his second record when setting the 1 1/16-mile mark around two turns in the La Jolla H. (G2) over the Del Mar turf course as a 3-year-old. Sidney’s Candy nearly added a dirt track record to his resume when he won the Sir Beaufort S. (G3) as a 3-year-old in 1:33 3/5, just 1/5 of a second off Santa Anita’s track record at a mile.

Sidney’s Candy scored his biggest win in the 1 1/8-mile Santa Anita Derby (G1), defeating a field that included champion Lookin At Lucky by 4 ½ lengths. He went on to capture six graded stakes wins in all, from California to Saratoga, and earning $1,104,810.

Sidney’s Candy hails from the Storm Cat mare Fair Exchange, the only daughter of multiple Grade 1 winner Exchange. He will stand his second season in 2013 at WinStar for a fee of $15,000 stands and nurses.
