Tiznow’s Red Ruby romps by 13 in Delaware Oaks (G3)

Red Ruby crushed her competition in dazzling style in Saturday’s $300,000 Delaware Oaks (G3), rolling to a 13-length win to give the 3-year-old by Tiznow her second consecutive graded stakes win.

Bred by Sandra Sexton, who co-owns the filly with Brandi Nicholson, Red Ruby has now won four of six starts and earned $438,000. He dam Caroni has produced four stakes winners, including LeComte S. (G3) winner Mo Tom.

Red Ruby got an ideal trip under Paco Lopez. After breaking alertly, she stalked longshot Prospective Lady through five furlongs, then took over easily entering the final turn. Despite being well off the rail, Red Ruby continued to draw clear from the field and was in hand as she stopped the timer in 1:42.41 for the 1 1/16-miles on the fast main track.

“I think we came into this race pretty confident,” said trainer Kellyn Gorder. “She was a little antsy before the race. She is not a nervous type, but she is the kind that just wants to get it on. She broke well and I figured she would be forwardly placed today. The Alabama (G1, 1 1/4-miles at Saratoga on August 18) has been our target and the farther she goes the better.”

Prior to Saturday’s win, Red Ruby took the Black-Eyed Susan S. (G2) by nearly five lengths on May 18. She also won Oaklawn Park’s Martha Washington S. in February.

Red Ruby is Tiznow’s second stakes winner this month and one of his 12 stakes horses this year. His progeny have now won more than $83 million worldwide.
