Straight No Chaser is by a talented son of Champion Sprinter and outstanding sire, Speightstown. The cross of Speightstown and sons with Sadler’s Wells has been exceptional, and Straight No Chaser’s sire, Speightster, is no exception with a multiple SW out of a mare by El Prado, three SWs out of mares by Medaglia d’Oro, and a SW of out a mare by Perfect Soul, suggesting mares by other El Prado sons, Kitten’s Joy, Artie Schiller, and Galileo. The cross of Speightstown and sons with Nureyev through Theatrical has also done very well, and Nureyev might be brought in through Unusual Heat, Acclamation, Atticus, Fasliyev, Spinning World or Stravinsky. Speightstown and sons have enjoyed remarkable success with mares from the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer, including G1Ws out of mares by Belong to Me, Danehill, Lost Soldier, Langfuhr, and Orpen; GSWs out of mares by Dayjur, Hard Spun and Honor Grades; and SWs out of mares by Partner’s Hero, War Chant, Exchange Rate and Chief’s Crown. Straight No Chaser is half-brother to a SW by Danzig line stallion, Pomeroy, and mares by War Front and his sons should also work. The Deputy Minister branch of Northern Dancer has done very well under Speightstown, with a G1W out of a mare by Deputy Minister himself, GSWs out of mares by Ghostzapper, Awesome Again, and Salt Lake, and SWs out of mares by Silver Deputy and his sons, and Touch Gold (broodmare sire of a Speightster SW). It could also be worth considering Dehere. Straight No Chaser is out of a mare by Johannesburg, a grandson of Storm Cat, but it will be worth breeding Straight No Chaser back over Storm Cat line mares. On that cross, Speightster has a SW out of a Bluegrass Cat mare. Speightstown has a G1W out of a mare by Menifee, a son of Harlan. From the same branch, there are also two GSWs out of mares by Harlan’s Holiday (sire of Into Mischief). There are two GSWs and a SW out of mares by Giant’s Causeway and his sons, a GSW out of a Freud mare, and two SWs out of mares by After Market. There are also Speightstown line GSWs out of mares by Shamardal, Tabasco Cat, Stormy Atlantic, and SWs out of mares by Bedford Falls, Shackleford and Discreet Cat (all by Forestry). There are more than 30 SWs on a cross with A.P. Indy line mares. In addition to those out of A.P. Indy himself, there are GSWs out of mares by Bernardini, and SWs out of mares by Malibu Moon, Flatter, Congrats, Majestic Warrior, Jump Start, Dance With Ravens (broodmare sire of a Speightster SW) and Pulpit. There have also been 8 SWs with mares by Tapit. Speightstown and sons have done very well with Caro line mares. From the Cozzene branch, there is a G1W out of a mare by Cozzene, and SWs out of mares by Mizzen Mast and Alphabet Soup. From the Indian Charlie branch, there is a G1W out of a mare by Indian Charlie, and a G1W out of a mare by Uncle Mo. Speightstown and sons have done well with the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector, with Speightster having a SW out of a mare by Quiet American (also broodmare sire of a Speightstown G1W) and a SW out of a mare by Half Ours (also broodmare sire of a Speightstown line G1W). There are three SWs out of mares by Unbridled’s Song. Speightstown has also enjoyed success with mares from the Relaunch line, including Honour and Glory, Put It Back, and Tiznow (broodmare sire of a Speightster SW). There are five SWs on a Speightstown cross with mares by More Than Ready, six SWs with mares by Holy Bull and his sons, Macho Uno and Flashy Bull, and four out of mares by Maria’s Mon. – Alan Porter
