Mr. Commons tries G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile

Artie Schiller won the 2005 Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), and now six years later a colt from his first crop, Mr. Commons, will try to duplicate his sire’s feat Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs. Mr. Commons is one of nine stakes horses this year for Artie Schiller, who is ranked in the top 10 on the second-crop sire list.

Mr. Commons earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 106 in his most recent start, the Oak Tree Mile (G2) at Santa Anita on Oct. 8. He rallied from last to be beaten less than a length that day, his third straight top-2 finish in one-mile turf races. Overall, he has bankrolled $323,660 for Ian Banwell, who campaigns the colt in the nom de course St. George Farm Racing LLC.

Mr. Commons is based in southern California with trainer John Shirrefs. Like many of Shirreff’s horses, Mr. Commons will be ridden Saturday by Mike Smith.

The bay colt is a half-brother to the three-time stakes winner Jungle Fighter and is out of Natalma S. winner Joustabout.

The Breeders’ Cup Mile, race 10 on Saturday, will run at approximately 6:05 p.m.
