Constitution-sired Chief Wallabee and Graded stakes winning WinStar homebred Class President currently sit at a respective fourth and fifth on the recent BloodHorse’s Derby Dozen, which was published on Tuesday.
Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott for Michael and Katherine Ball, Chief Wallabee was a hard-fought second in the last out G2 Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Park, garnering 25 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard. This effort came following a highly-impressive maiden score at Gulfstream, where he defeated eventual G2 Tampa Bay Derby winner The Puma by 1 ½ lengths. The triumph earned Chief Wallabee TDN Rising Star status.
Chief Wallabee is slated to make his next start in the upcoming G1 $1 million Florida Derby on March 28 at Gulfstream Park, which is worth 100 points to the winner.
Class President, trained by dual Kentucky Derby-winning Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, secured a spot in the Derby Dozen following a triumphant two-turn debut in the G2 Rebel S. at Oaklawn Park. There, the son of Uncle Mo sat behind a moderate pace and gamely battled to the inside of Silent Tactic down the stretch to win by a nose. The win garnered 50 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard.
Prior to the Rebel, Class President finished second in the Swale S. after breaking his maiden on debut going a one-turn mile at Gulfstream Park over next-out winner and fellow WinStar color-bearer Easterly. He is out of the Quality Road mare Top Quality, who also produced stakes winner American Speed.
