WinStar Farm’s Grade 1 winner and North American track record-setter Cogburn sired his first reported foal on Jan. 4, when a filly out of the Oasis Dream (GB) mare Posset (GB) was born at Goodwin Farm. The filly, whose dam is a full sister to Juddmonte’s multiple Group 1 winner Midday (GB)—an earner of more than $3.4 million and winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1)—was bred by Jay Goodwin, David Rogers, and Brooke Buffkin.
“This is a really good filly,” said Jay Goodwin. “She bounced right up and was whipping around the paddock in no time. We love fast horses.”
A fleet-footed son of the red-hot stallion Not This Time, Cogburn was the fastest Grade 1-winning sprinter in the world in 2024. He was an electrifying winner of the Jaipur S. (G1) at Saratoga where he set a North American record for 5 ½ furlongs on the turf. Completing the distance in a head-turning final time of :59.80, Cogburn easily eclipsed the previous record of 1:00.21 set in 2019, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 114. Cogburn was also an authoritative winner of the $2 million Turf Sprint S. (G2) at Kentucky Downs in his next start where he covered six furlongs on turf in 1:07.68, just missing another course record.
All told, Cogburn finished first or second in 11-of-16 lifetime starts and banked $2,422,630 racing for Clark Brewster, William and Corinne Heiligbrodt, and trainer Steve Asmussen. Cogburn is produced from the stakes-winning Saintly Look mare In a Jif, and he bred 194 mares in his initial season at stud last year.
