Pricey Good Samaritan filly very sharp at first asking

Good Sam made a very nice impression in her racing debut Sunday at Aqueduct, drawing off in the stretch to take the 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race by nearly five lengths (WATCH RACE).

The 2-year-old filly is the ninth winner from the first crop of Good Samaritan, whose offspring have blossomed of late as the race distances have stretched beyond the traditional short sprints for juveniles in the spring and early summer.

Good Sam shot out of the gate from her inside post to take the lead immediately, then settled into a very fluid stride as she was pressed by Spelterini through a half-mile in :48.39. Good Sam put two lengths on the field at the top of the stretch and increased that advantage through the final furlong to finish the distance in 1:17.28 over the sloppy going.

Good Sam is owned by Peter Brant and sold for $310,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling sale. The bay filly was bred by Maccabee Farm and is out of Twizzler, whose dam Twist Afleet was a seven-time graded stakes winner.
