Full Flat took over the lead at the quarter-pole en route to a 2 1/2-length win in Saturday’s inaugural Saudi Derby Cup Saturday in Saudi Arabia. The 3-year-old son of Speightstown broke his maiden in his home base of Japan before finishing a credible fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1).
Bred in Kentucky by Sierra Farm, Full Flat was purchased by his owner Hideyuki Mori for $250,000 at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling sale. Full Flat is out of Golden Flair, who is a half-sister to champion Stravinsky and the stakes winner Moscow Ballet (IRE).
Away well from the outside post in the field of 13, Full Flat pressed the pace until assuming command from Rajee Allah just before entering the stretch. Striding out powerfully, the bay colt finished the mile in 1:37.91.
The victory upped Full Flat’s earnings to $628,382.
Full Flat is Speightstown’s 112th lifetime stakes winner and 176th lifetime stakes horse. A perennial top-10 sire, Speightstown is in the top five on this year’s General Sire list.
