$1.1 million Speightster colt on final day of OBS 2yo sale

Speightster had the highest-priced colt by a freshman sire of the OBS June Sale during the final day of the auction when hip No. 1312 sold for $1.1 million.

The striking chestnut juvenile, already named Fortunate Son, was one of only three lots to bring seven figures.

Bred by Danzel Brendemuehl Classic Mares, Tom McCrocklin, agent consigned the colt, with Christina Jelm bidding on behalf of Larry Best’s OXO Equine, the winning buyer.

“I’ve got to tell you, I’ve been asked a lot here, ‘How did you buy that horse for $110,000?’ He was always beautiful and at the end of the day, I don’t know how I got him bought,” McCrocklin said. “He’s the only one I have by Speighster, but I started singing his praises as soon as this horse showed the ability he has.”

McCrocklin bought the colt for the $110,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearlings Sale.

Fortunate Son is out of the multiple stakes-placed Indian Charlie mare Auspicious.
