WinStar Farm is announcing stud fees earlier than usual for the 2016 breeding season, which in part will offer breeders the opportunity to lock in a fee on a stallion before next week’s Breeders’ Cup. WinStar has at least eight stallions with progeny running in the Breeders’ Cup or other major races through the remainder of 2015.
“We’ve seen this trend of stud fees being released earlier and earlier every year, which is easier to do for stallions that don’t have Breeders’ Cup contenders,” said Elliott Walden, WinStar President & CEO. “We are very fortunate at WinStar to have strong participation by our stallions’ progeny in the Breeders’ Cup, and obviously, since that is our industry’s championship event, the year’s racing calendar is not complete without it.
“However, we believe that announcing fees early presents an opportunity for breeders to have the chance at realizing some great value, particularly in the stallions that have serious contenders in this year’s biggest Breeders’ Cup races. So for the first time, WinStar is offering pre-Breeders’ Cup fees on all stallions,” Walden added. “All fees are at the lowest they will be, so we believe it’s a real opportunity to lock in a stud fee that only has the chance to go up after Oct. 29th.”
WinStar’s 2016 roster is headed by Pioneerof the Nile, who is being offered for $125,000 S&N after a historical year that saw the world’s runaway leading third-crop sire have the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years with his son American Pharoah. Speightstown is also enjoying a stellar year, siring a pair of Grade 1 winners on the track and popularity among his yearlings at the major sales. He joins perennial leading sire Distorted Humor as the two stallions being offered at $100,000 S&N for 2016.
Super Saver is another mover after a banner year that saw him become the fastest to sire three Grade 1 winners from his first crop since Tapit and Bernardini. Super Saver, who has multiple first-crop Breeders’ Cup contenders Super Majesty and Grade 1 winner Runhappy, is being offered at a fee of $55,000 S&N.
WinStar welcomes two Grade 1 winners new to its 2016 roster, including Giant’s Causeway’s multiple Grade 1-winning son, Carpe Diem, who will stand for a fee of $25,000 S&N. Daredevil, More Than Ready’s Champagne S. (G1)-winning juvenile, will stand for $12,500 S&N.
A signed contract, including a mare name, is required to take advantage of pre-Breeders’ Cup fees. WinStar’s 22-stallion roster for 2016, along with pre-Breeders’ Cup fees, is as follows:
