China Horse Club and WinStar Farm’s Good Samaritan could be headed to the Breeders’ Cup following the 2-year-old’s win in Sunday’s $200,000 Summer S. (G2) at Woodbine.
The race is part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” series, earning a fees-paid berth in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), which will be run over one mile at Santa Anita on Nov. 4.
Winner of a maiden special weight over the Saratoga turf on Aug. 13 in his debut, the Bill Mott trainee was very patiently ridden by Joel Rosario as he sat in the back of the seven-horse field until about three furlongs from the wire. Rosario took his mount off the hedge to go widest of all into the stretch and rolled by the entire field in short order, going on to win by nearly two lengths in 1:34.38 for the mile on the firm turf.
“He’s very professional,” said Rosario, who was also aboard in the debut. “When he starts running he’s very focused—when I rode him last time he was the same way. He’s shown that he had a lot of talent. He may have a good future.”
Bred in Kentucky by WinStar, Good Samaritan upped his lifetime earnings to $140,616. The colt’s dam Pull Dancer, also campaigned by WinStar, was twice stakes-placed.
