Mindframe bests star-studded field in $1 million Stephen Foster S. (G1)

Constitution’s stellar 4-year-old colt Mindframe made it three graded stakes wins in a row Saturday at Churchill Downs with his one-length victory in the $1 million Stephen Foster S. (G1).

Mindframe was coming into Saturday’s 1 1/8-mile race off a victory in the seven-furlong Churchill Downs S. (G1) on Derby Day, when his career earnings surpassed $1 million.

Mindframe is the third graded stakes winner of the month for Constitution, who is currently sixth on the 2025 General Sire list with over $7.4 million in progeny earnings.

The Foster drew arguably the best field of the year thus far, with the 2024 Horse of the Year Sierra Leone, 2024 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mystik Dan, 2025 Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Hit Show and $2 million earner First Mission all in the starting gate.

Mindframe, with Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the irons, took up a position in second as First Mission set the early pace. First Mission led by two lengths midway down the backstretch before Mindframe began to cut into the margin. At the top of the lane, Mindframe stuck his head in front, with Sierra Leone, on the outside, and Mystik Dan, along the fence, also mounting bids. Showing great determination, Mindframe held his foes at bay for the length of the stretch to secure his second straight Grade 1 win in 1:47.48 over a fast track.

The final time was just .22 seconds off the track record of 1:47.26.

“We’re just incredibly proud of him for how he was able to stretch out his natural speed today,” said winning trainer Todd Pletcher. “Sierra Leone came with a huge run around the turn and he had to hold off some top-class horses and was able to do so.”

With the victory, Mindframe earned a fees-paid berth into the Breeders’ Cup Classic, via the “Win and You’re In” program.

With second-place finishes in both the Belmont S. (G1) and Haskell (G1) on his resume as well, Mindframe is now 5-2-0 in seven starts and has earned $1,844,580 for owner Mike Repole.

Bred in Maryland by the late R. Larry Johnson, Mindframe is out of stakes winner Walk of Stars.
