Scarlett Begonia rolled past the leaders in midstretch on her way to a rousing 3 ¾-length win in her July 6 debut at Ellis Park, earning the 2-year-old Life Is Good filly a TDN ‘Rising Star’.
Scarlett Begonia is the second Rising Star for Life Is Good, who has got off to an excellent start with his first crop of runners. Currently sitting atop the First-Crop Sire list, Life Is Good has five maiden special weight winners, including Waggley, who went on to win the Kentucky Juvenile S. during Derby week at Churchill Downs.
After an alert break, Scarlett Begonia settled back in fifth as Avalon Rose and Todayisagoodday opened up on the field. With some seven lengths to make up midway on the turn, Scarlett Begonia began her drive for the lead. She switched to the outside coming out of the turn, and with powerful strides, blew past her foes and went on to win very impressively.
The winner is trained by Brad Cox for Hat Creek Racing, Ashview Farm and Upland Flats Racing and was bred in Kentucky by Gray Lyster and Gatewood Bell. Scarlett Begonia is out of Asiya, making her a half-sister to multiple graded winner Zaajel.
