Take Charge Indy’s classy race mare Bernietakescharge won Wednesday’s $200,000 Critical Eye S. at Saratoga for the second year in a row to give the 5-year-old her fourth career stakes win.
The dark bay was in control of the 1 1/8-mile race from the outset, with Landed pressing her through six furlongs in 1:10.22. Bernietakescharge began to pull away from Landed on the far turn and came into the homestretch with a two-length advantage. She maintained that gap down the lane, with Valtellina closing late to be a well-beaten second.
“I trained the mare Berning Rose,” said conditioner Domenick Schettino. “She won a big stake for us, for Mr. Rosenthal and his family, and Brad Bernstein. The babies, since the first one, Berning Honor, she broke her maiden, then Bernietakescharge and Bernieandtherose are both multiple stakes winners.”
Now 8-4-2 in 23 starts, Bernietakescharge has earned $739,830 for the owner/breeder combination of Robert D. Rosenthal & Bradford Bernstein.
