Congrats’ Last Judgment goes gate-to-wire in Pimlico Special (G3)

Last Judgment’s front-running win in Friday’s $250,000 Pimlico Special (G3) gave the son of Congrats his second graded stakes win and third stakes victory of 2021.

Congrats is the sire of some 42 black type winners, 12 graded, and 105 stakes horses lifetime. In 2021, he has accounted for the winners of 102 races to date, second only to Into Mischief.

After getting away from the gate very quickly from the outside post in the field of 10, the 5-year-old set all the fractions, with no one in the field getting within 1 1/2-lengths of him at any point. Modernist was closest at the wire, 1 3/4-lengths back as the winner finished up the 1 3/16-miles in 1:54.37 on a fast track.

“Very classy horse,” winning trainer Mike Maker said. “We like the way he’s responded on that stretch out. He’s run well for us going a mile and an eighth. I was glad to stretch him out and hoped to get a softer pace going longer.”

Owned by Michael Dubb, Steve Hornstock, Bethlehem Stables and Nice Guys Stables, Last Judgment won the Challenger S. (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs in March and was second in the Ghostzapper S. (G3) that same month. With Friday’s win, he has won eight of 18 starts and earned $490,465.

The winner was bred by Woodford Thoroughbreds and sold for $300,000 at the 2018 OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds.
