Constitution colt becomes millionaire in Jim McKay Turf Sprint S.

Chasing Liberty became racing’s newest millionaire with his rail-skimming victory in the $125,000 Jim McKay Turf Sprint S. at Laurel Park.

The win marked the fourth career stakes score for the 4-year-old Constitution colt, who has now earned $1,051,309 for owners Twin Creeks Racing Stables LLC and CMNWLTH, the former also the colt’s breeder.

Away in good order and rated in midpack down the backstretch, Chasing Liberty made his way to the rail going into the turn. He held his spot in the middle stages and moved into fourth turning for home. Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. found an opening along the fence with a furlong to go, and Chasing Liberty shot through to take the lead. He was immediately challenged by Outlaw Kid from the far outside, but outfought his foe to win by a nose in 1:10.37, less than a second off the track record.

“When I saw [Outlaw Kid] coming from the outside, I was like ‘Here we go again,’” said winning trainer Rob Atras, referring to Outlaw Kid’s neck victory over Chasing Liberty a month ago. “Down the lane, he was so determined to keep in front. I was thrilled for him today. Really a great ride by Irad too.”

A top-10 General Sire of 2026, Constitution has accounted for some 20 stakes horses worldwide this year. The WinStar Farm stallion stands for $110,000 S&N.
