Exaggerator’s connections “confident” ahead of Preakness (G1)

Exaggerator’s big rally in the May 7 Kentucky Derby (G1) have his connections looking forward to the rematch with Nyquist in Saturday’s $1.5 million Preakness S. (G1) at Pimlico.

“The only thing we can do to perhaps turn the tables is that Exaggerator is such a quick-recovering horse,” said trainer Keith Desormeaux. “The two-week turnaround is going to play to our advantage instead of to most horses’ disadvantage. We’re confident we can turn the tables.”

Exaggerator drew post 5 in Saturday’s 13th race and will be ridden as usual by the trainer’s brother, Kent.

“One word—inconsequential,” the trainer said of Exaggerator’s draw. “For Exaggerator, who comes off the pace, why do we need to worry about what position we are? His style is not dependent on speed and we have this huge run-up to this first turn. There’s just no doubt Kent will have the position he wants. He’ll either be five lengths or 15 off, but he’ll be off the pace.”

Exaggerator, who will take up stud duties at WinStar Farm once his racing career concludes, has been stellar in his ten races to date, earning more than $2 million, with victories in the Santa Anita Derby (G1), Saratoga Special (G2) and Delta Jackpot (G3).
