Law Professor gives Constitution his 30th black type winner

The nation’s leading Third-Crop sire of 2021 added to his impressive list of stakes winners on Dec. 26 when Law Professor won an off-the-turf running of the $200,000 Santa Anita Mathis Mile (G2) by a half-length over Beyond Brilliant.

Just a couple of hours before Law Professor’s victory, Constitution got his first stakes winner of the day when Never Surprised captured the Tropical Park Derby at Gulfstream Park. The WinStar stallion now has 18 graded winners, nine of them in Grade 1’s.

Law Professor was making just his second stakes start in the Mathis Mile. He broke alertly from post eight and took his spot just behind pacesetter Beyond Brilliant into the first turn. He held his spot until entering the far turn, when he quickly moved up along side Beyond Brilliant. The duo was nearly inseparable from that point, with Law Professor edging clear in the final sixteenth to win by a half-length in 1:37.41 on the fast main track.

“It’s great to have a horse that is as versatile as him,” trainer Michael McCarthy said. “I don’t know what (the future) holds for him just yet, but after what we saw today (Law Professor lugging in in the stretch), we may think about putting a little blinker back on him. We have a lot of options at play, it’s very exciting.”

Law Professor, 3, is now 3-0-1 in seven starts and has earned $226,640. He is owned by his breeder Twin Creeks Farm/Racing Stables.
