Speightstown added two new stakes winners to his prolific stats in recent days, with Ultimate pulling off a shocker in the $100,000 Iowa Sprint S. on July 7 at Prairie Meadows and Chiseler winning the $100,000 Dade Park Dash S. a day later at Ellis Park.
Ultimate was well off the early pace on Friday evening, before he began to make up ground midway on the turn. Heavy favorite Strobe had taken the lead and looked to be home free before Ultimate surged past him in mid-stretch. Strobe had no answer for Ultimate in the final furlong as he went on to win by nearly two lengths in 1:09.15 for the six furlongs on a fast track.
Ultimate was bred by Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds LLC and is owned by Heath and Sheena Campbell. The 5-year-old’s first stakes win upped his record to 8-7-1 from 29 starts and earnings to $362,556. Ultimate is a half-brother to this year’s Preakness S. (G1) winner National Treasure.
Chiseler, 3, broke on top in Saturday’s 5 ½-furlong turf race, but eased back off the pace when he was five-wide on the backstretch. Corey Lanerie guided Chiseler to the fence and was fourth behind the leaders as they turned for home. When an opening came available along the rail, Chiseler shot through to take the lead and quickly drew off to win by 2 ¼-lengths in 1:01.82 on the firm turf.
Chiseler is now 2-3-0 in 10 starts and has earned $166,582 for Hoolie Racing Stable LLC. He was bred in Kentucky by Purple H Bloodstock and hails from the family of multiple Grade 1 winner Lion Heart and graded stakes winner Long Haul Bay.
Speightstown, the sire of six champions, 137 black type winners and earners of more than $150 million lifetime, commands a stud fee of $80,000 S&N.
