Take Charge Indy filly headed for Grade 1 Test S. after earning first stakes win

Indy Bay scored her third straight victory in Sunday’s $150,000 Jersey Girl S. at Saratoga, setting up the 3-year-old Take Charge Indy filly for a potential start in next month’s Text S. (G1) at the historic upstate New York track.

Indy Bay, who was making her stakes debut following a sharp allowance score at Oaklawn Park on April 28, took a bit to get into stride before she managed to get within a head of pacesetter Long Neck Paula after a quarter-mile. She got even closer to the lead on the turn before Long Neck Paula pulled a length clear at the top of the stretch. With a sustained run down the lane, Indy Bay wore down Long Neck Paula to win by a head in 1:09.70 for the six furlongs on a fast track.

“After the Oaklawn race we felt very good, figure-wise,” trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. said. “At the top of the stretch (today) I didn’t feel very good. I thought she was going backwards for a minute. At the wire I felt a lot better. She trained well and she just continues to improve. She’s a gutsy filly and you can probably see her being in the Test. Her granddam is (G1 winner) Harmony Lodge, who was a pretty good horse.”

Indy Bay is owned by the partnership of C Two Racing Stable, Paul Braverman and Timothy Pinch and was bred by Frankfort Park Farm. The dark bay filly’s record now stands at 3-1-1 in five starts with earnings of $228,000.

Indy Bay is Take Charge Indy’s second stakes winner of the week at Saratoga, coming four days after Bernietakescharge won the $200,000 Critical Eye S.
