Outwork’s 2-year-old filly Brightwork remained undefeated after going gate to wire in Sunday’s 122nd running of the $225,000 Debutante at Ellis Park.
Brightwork, who was a three-length debut winner April 26 at Keeneland, broke on top in the six-furlong Debutante and led the short field of four through a quarter-mile in :22.56. V V’s Dream was within a length of Brightwork at the top of the stretch before she re-broke and opened up once again. At the wire, V V’s Dream came up a half-length short as Brightwork stopped the timer in a very good 1:09.79.
“Right now we’re going to continue with the program for this year,” trainer John Ortiz said. “We mapped out her races and could either stay here at Ellis Park or go to Saratoga. … The last two months we prepared her for today. She showed her skills today.
Brightwork races for WSS Racing, LLC and has earned $169,051.
Bred in Kentucky by Wynnstay Inc. and H. Allen Poindexter, Brightwork was produced by the Malibu Moon mare Clarendon Fancy and sold for $95,000 at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale.
