Audible filly earns Black-Eyed Susan S. (G2) berth with Weber City Miss victory

Call Another Play’s come-from-behind victory in Saturday’s $125,000 Weber City Miss S. at Laurel Park earned the 3-year-old daughter of Audible an automatic berth in the starting gate for this year’s Miss Preakness S. (G2), should her connections choose to run.

Call Another Play, who was making her stakes debut in Saturday’s 1 1/16-mile contest, was unhurried early and was last of five through the first quarter-mile. She inched a bit closer to the leaders on the backstretch, then made a bold move for the lead around the turn. Taking command with a quarter-mile to go, Call Another Play drew off in the final furlong to win by 3 ½-lengths.

“It’s always in the back of your mind. That’s a tough thing to do, but I’ll talk to [owner] Larry [Johnson] about it [the automatic berth to the 100th running of the GII Black-Eyed Susan S.] and we’ll see what the plans are,” winning trainer Mike Trombetta said. “She’s been great and getting this done is a big deal. We’ll sit down and figure it out.”

Now a winner of three straight starts, Call Another Play has earned $208,625 and is 4-1-2 in nine starts. The chestnut filly was bred by her owner.

After finishing in the top 10 on last year’s First-Crop sire list, Audible leads the 2024 Second-Crop list by wins, with 30, and by stakes winners.
