Freedom Flyer earns black type in Santa Anita’s Wishing Well S.

Freedom Flyer, a 5-year-old daughter of Constitution, was a determined winner of Saturday’s $100,000 Wishing Well S., repelling several foes in deep stretch to win the downhill turf race by a neck.

Freedom Flyer is the fourth stakes winner this year for Constitution, the most for any Fifth-Crop sire. Constitution led the 2022 Fourth-Crop list with 14 stakes winners, 18 graded stakes horses and 32 stakes horses.

Coming off a close third in the Jan. 2 Las Cienegas S. (G3), Freedom Flyer went right to the lead out of the gate from her outside post in the field of six. Stella Noir pressed her through a half in :44.35 before giving way. In the stretch, Bay Storm and late-closing Big Summer mounted serious challenges, but the winner was too good, finishing the about 6 ½-furlongs in 1:12.34 on a firm turf.

“I’m very happy about her performance. She was sharp out of the gate,” said winning trainer Leonard Powell. “I was very happy because she was extremely game for the last eighth of a mile, she had challenges from multiple horses and she fought them off all the way.”

Owned by Marsha Naify, Freedom Flyer is 4-5-4 in 21 starts and has earned $272,120. She was bred in Kentucky by A. R. Enterprises, Inc.
