American Sugar wins Dixie Belle

Harlan’s Holiday got his second stakes winner of 2013 on Jan. 20 when American Sugar scored a dominating seven-length victory in the $60,000 Dixie Belle S. for 3-year-old fillies at Oaklawn Park.

American Sugar stumbled slightly just after the break and was last in the field of eight as Baby Princess set the early pace. With a five-wide move, the dark bay filly took command at the top of the stretch and drew off to win in a final time of 1:11.66 for six furlongs over a fast track.

“She just out broke herself, but she’s so athletic,” said winning jockey Alex Birzer. “She’s such a nice filly. By the time I needed to ask her at the top of the stretch she had already taken herself to the lead. From there it was just a matter of finishing our business. Lynn and her crew have done such a great job with her.”

American Sugar, trained by Lynn Chleborad and owned by Poindexter Farms, has now won three stakes at three different racetracks and overall, has won four of eight career starts for $138,866 in earnings.

Harlan’s Holiday has had a terrific January, with Zeewat winning the California Derby last weekend and Shanghai Bobby winning the 2012 2-year-old male Eclipse Award honors on Jan. 19.
