Bayerd bounds to third stakes victory

Speightstown’s speedy 3-year-old son Bayerd made his way to the winner’s circle for the fourth time in his career in Saturday’s $60,000 Bonapaw S. at Fair Grounds, winning the 5 ½-furlong, off-the-turf contest by a length under Florent Geroux (VIDEO).

Bayerd, who is trained by Steve Asmussen for Clark Brewster, rallied four wide from fifth at the top of the lane to gain the victory in 1:04.52 on a fast track.

Bayerd’s win continued Speightstown’s showing in 2015 into the new year. The perennial top-10 stallion finished last year ranked eighth on the General Sire List, with nearly $9.9 million in progeny earnings, led by Grade 1 winners Rock Fall and Force the Pass.

Bayerd, who won a pair of stakes last year as a 2-year-old, is now 4-6-2 in 14 starts and has earned $486,900. His dam Cherokee Jewel was also a two-time stakes winner.
