New stakes winner for Bluegrass Cat

Bluegrass Pride just missed the track record in Sunday’s $50,000 Richmond Derby Trial at Hastings Park en route to becoming the latest stakes winner for his sire Bluegrass Cat (VIDEO).

Bluegrass Cat, New York’s leading sire of 2013 and Storm Cat’s top son standing outside of Kentucky. His progeny have bankrolled $3.7 million and won eight stakes this year.

Bluegrass Pride’s winning move in the Trial came on the final of three turn, when the 3-year-old chestnut swept four wide into the stretch to hit the front about a sixteenth before the wire, then hold sway to win by three parts of a length. The time was 1:42.94, just a half second off the 1 1/16-mile track record.

Bred by WinStar Farm, Bluegrass Pride is 3-3-1 in nine starts, with a bankroll of $76,692. He is out of the unraced mare Racetothealtar, a half-sister to Whirlaway S. winner Saratoga Blues.
