Speightstown filly wins $75K Sandpiper S.
Saturday, December 10, 2011
Quick Flip, a 2-year-old filly by Speightstown, got her first career stakes win Dec. 10 at Tampa Bay Downs with a 1 1/2-length win in the $75,000 Sandpiper S. View race replay here (select race #9). Speightstown, a top-10 sire of 2011, now has 14 stakes winners on the year.

Owned by Klaravich Stables and W.H. Lawrence and trained by Teresa Pompay, Quick Flip tracked swift early fractions set by Red Hot Doll before being roused to the lead on the turn under jockey Pedro Cotto, Jr. Quick Flip held sway in the stretch to get the six furlongs in 1:10.96.

“I thought she looked great in the paddock today, and I loved her,” Pompay said. “She been training great. She’s done nothing wrong. She is getting better every race and there is a lot of room for her to get even better and better.”

Cotto, who also rode Quick Flip in her Monmouth Park allowance victory Oct. 23, also was looking to the future after the win. “I knew she would like this track, and I learned riding her up north she was more than just a quick horse,” Cotto said. “She overcame some trouble at Monmouth and still just drew away. This is a sweet filly and I hope I can ride her some more.”

The Kentucky-bred out of Motel Lass was a $225,000 2-year-old purchase in the Fasig-Tipton February south Florida sale and is now 3-for-3 lifetime with earnings of $84,000. Her next out could be  in the Gasparilla S., also at Tampa Bay Downs, on Jan. 14.
