Stakes veteran Pink Poppy annexes Wasted Tears S.

Tiznow’s classy distaffer Pink Poppy tallied her third lifetime stakes victory on Saturday at Gulfstream Park with a three-quarter length win in the $75,000 Wasted Tears S. The win was the second stakes score of the year for the 5-year-old daughter of Tiznow, who joins Grade 1 winner Tourist as one of Tiznow’s 10 black-type horses of 2016.

With First Illusion gunning for the lead, Pink Poppy settled nicely into second and tracked the leader until entering the final turn, when she moved up alongside to challenge for the lead. First Illusion gave way with a furlong to run, and Pink Poppy held off a host of challengers in deep stretch to get the 1 1/16-miles in 1:42.21.

Pink Poppy, an Arindel Farm homebred, has now won $292,501 with a total of seven top-three finishes in black-type races.
