Speightstown’s Lady Speightspeare named Canadian Champion 2YO of 2020

Lady Speightspeare, who was undefeated in 2020, was named Champion 2-year-old Filly of 2020 at the 46th Annual Sovereign Awards ceremony hosted virtually by the Jockey Club of Canada on Thursday evening, April 15, 2021.

Lady Speightspeare, a Charles Fipke homebred, showed her brilliance right from her Aug. 22 debut at Woodbine, winning a seven-furlong maiden special weight turf affair by nearly four lengths. She wheeled back a month later to capture the grassy one-mile Natalma S. (G1).

Sent to the sidelines for the winter, Lady Speightspeare has recently returned to the worktab for trainer Roger Attfield, most recently recording bullet three furlongs on April 13 at Payson Park in Florida.

The now 3-year-old daughter of Speightstown was one of four Grade 1 winners by her sire in 2020. Lady Speightspeare is out of multiple graded stakes winner Lady Shakespeare, whose siblings include Grade 1 winners Perfect Shirl and Shakespeare
